We departed Texas with the 1000 mile journey spaced to arrive st St. Simons, Georgia on March 1, 2109 where we had an apartment rented for the month. Stops were made at Eunice, Louisiana, Ocean Springs Mississippi, Fort Morgan, Alabama, and Waycross Georgia. We found that Interstate I-10 was too busy and with accidents traffic would back up for miles. We changed our plan and drove more on US and state roads. Part of our journey took us thru the devastation of hurricane Michael, a category 5 with 155 mph winds, which devastated the Florida gulf coast and inland communities.

We birded Dauphin Island near Mobile Alabama and took the ferry to Ft. Morgan. for fun and to avoid backtracking thru Mobile.

A nice day on the ferry. Note the oil platforms in the backgound

We arrived at St. Simons and spent most of the day unpacking and getting settled at the Methodist retreat center called Epsworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island offshore from Brunswick, Ga. Our apartment is a ground level, two room apartment with combined kitchen-dining-living room and separate bedroom. It has 2 TV’s, both rooms have a combined heat/air conditioning unit. and the kitchen has stove/refrigerator and basic furnishing.. Epsworth is located on 43 acres, was bought and built in 1945, and contains a motel, apartments, chapel, museum, meeting rooms, parks, and more. It is a very quiet location.

View from our apartment. The tree is a Live Oak (probably 200 years old) with Spanish Moss. Note our bird feeder hanging from the tree in the center. We have Cardinals and Chickadees daily plus other birds.
