We departed SD on January 19, 2020 with the camper thru Nebraska and central Colorado heading for Limon, CO. All went well until we tried to turn south on CO 71 at Brush where we found a barricade. The highway was closed to all trucks and campers with only cars permitted due to an accident. We then changed our destination to Lamar, CO and arrived there well after dark. Fortunately the motel had electrical plug-ins to keep the camper furnace running and our supplies from freezing.
Day number two thru the panhandle of Oklahoma and into Texas was routine and we un-winterized the camper and spent the night at Palo Duro State Park near Amarillo. Palo Duro is called the “Grand Canyon” of Texas as it is located about 600 feet below the surrounding area.
Day three took us to Snyder, TX where we stopped for lunch and a two hour visit with my cousin Dorothy. After lunch we continued to Balmorhea State Park only to find that it was closed for construction until Spring of 2020. We had asked about this at Palo Duro, but were assured it was open. It was getting dark by then but we proceeded on to Fort Davis SP on a very mountainous road. When coming around a curve we discovered a small Javelina in the middle of the road. You don’t try to swerve pulling a camper, so we tried to straddle it but it moved and we wiped it out. Fortunately the pickup wasn’t damaged, but the Jqavelina didn’t do as well.
We spent a couple of days at Ft. Davis then went south to Study Butte on the western edge of Big Bend National Park and spent a week in the area at Big Bend Resort and RV. Here are some of the highlights:
Rio Grande Village is on the east side of the park. We spent the day hiking (4+ miles) and birding. This is a view along the nature trail with Mexico in the background.
