Mt. Kitt Observatory between Tucson and Sells, AZ. There are 27 telescopes at the site.
A ranch existed in Alamo canyon. The corral was built from railroad ties hauled in over a very rocky wagon trail. A Pelton wheel used to generate electricity lies broken on the ground, and water was pumped from an underground spring. Tough living in the desert.
Rocks, cactus, but not much grass in Alamo Canyon. A nice 1.5 mile RT walk.

One of our favorite desert birds, a Black-throated Sparrow having a drink at the Organ Pipes Cactus National Monument visitor's center. The pond also contains the endangered "Pupfish."
A Great-horned Owl sleeping above the 9th hole at the Ajo Golf Course. Sorry, I couldn't pass it up!
We drove to Surprise, AZ (west Phoenix) and visited friends from SD, Cal and Aldean. The grapefruit they gave us from the tree in the background are delicious.
I always put up bird feeders. We had good results at our Why campsite including this Anna's Hummingbird feeding right outside out front window. We also had a Black-chinned Hummingbird at the same feeder.
